Across the Denver Metro area, from Golden to Highlands Ranch, we are receiving plenty of wet & heavy snow. The storm began dropping snow flakes beginning around 6 AM, just before Denver residents morning commute. The storm did not start accumulating on most sidewalks, driveways or parking lots until around noon. Sections of pavement which are heavily shaded, such as north facing sides, began accumulating earlier mid-morning. The storm is expected to continue through until tomorrow morning with light accumulation after midnight.

Tomorrow morning, be careful as this extremely wet storm will very likely freeze and cause ice. The roads will be extremely treacherous until Saturday’s temperatures warms up. There will also be heavy drifting with the winds Denver has been experiencing.

If you need help with snow shoveling or plowing give A Better Garden Maintenance, LLC a call at (303) 433 - 3750. We provide full service snow removal contracts for most of the Denver Metro area. We service all types of properties; residential homes, business parks as well as all retail & commercial sites.

Helping people enjoy the beauty of God in their lawn & gardens

This is a dramatic difference from the last week where high temperatures this last week were in the upper 60’s. Two storm fronts are colliding over the metro area. The artic front is pushing in and the second front is bringing up moisture from the Gulf of Mexico. This system is similar to the blizzards experienced in both the March snow storm of 2003 and the Christmas blizzards of 2006 both of which left over 2-3 feet of heavy wet snow across the metro area.

This snow storm will bring much needed precipitation for lawns and gardens across the Denver metro area. Snowfall now will help to increase the snow pack, providing water for many states across the United States of America. Much moisture will also be stored into the soil for use during the dry times of the summer. This storm should start off as rain and turn over to snow in the early morning hours.

March snow storms bring a heavy wet snow. Make sure you have scoop snow shovels to combat this heavy white menace. When shoveling it is important to scoop small sections(3-4 inches at a time), from top to bottom, in order to not break the snow shovel. If you have a push shovel the best way to combat this storm is by shoveling multiple times throughout the storm. Whenever shoveling snow, make sure you clear the snow from all the pavement and concrete. A buffer strip along this edge should be established to prevent and reduce possible ice from the melting snow flooding over the sidewalk.

If this snow storm is too much for you, we at A Better Garden Maintenance will happily set up a snow removal contract for your home or commercial property. We offer snow plowing services, snow shoveling services and ice prevention & removal materials application as each site requires. Give us a call at (303) 433 - 3750 to get your property serviced.

Helping people enjoy the beauty of God in their lawn & gardens

There are five key elements (Soil/Soil Preparation, Plant Selection, Watering, Fertilizing, and Deadheading) to help maximize bloom to keep a colorful and inviting appearance in your garden throughout the spring and summer months.

1) Site Selection/Plant Selection

The plant material selected to grow in a container or in an annual flower bed is directly correlated to the sun’s exposure. In areas of high sun exposure you would want annual grasses, petunias, lantana, lobelia, zinnias, marigolds, daisies, geraniums, cuphea, sweet potato vine, verbena and other annual flowers and colorful vegetation to accent the area being planted. In shade areas, you want to have dahlia, ageratum, begonias, impatiens, calibrachoa, pansies, coleus, angelonia and other plants adapted to flower and be colorful in low light conditions.

2) Soil/Soil Preparation

There are two situations which will be discussed; Containers & Pots and Annual Flower Beds.

Containers & Pots

The best investment you make every year or each time you replant your containers & pots for your patio garden is the soil. Having fresh sterile soil gives a clean start by eliminating the risk of pathogens from previous years. (If flowers in a container were infected the previous year, either replace the container, sterilize the container or plant a different variety of plants in the container.). Containers & pots need a specialized soil, one that helps retain both moisture and nutrients while still supplying the necessary air for the roots. The soil needs to contain a mixture of vermiculite, perlite, moss, sand or whatever mixture for which the specific plants need.

In the Denver area a potting soil needs the ability to drain quickly, yet still hold a massive amount of water. Colorado’s intense sun rays and dry air suck the water out of the soil in the containers. It is important to have a soil mixture which will withstand Denver’s conditions.

***Regular soil from your garden should never be used, especially in Colorado. The soil does not provide the appropriate drainage required and our Colorado clay soils pull away from the sides of a container making it difficult to rewet.

Annual Flower Beds

Flowers which are being planted in the ground need a sandy loam which has a lot of organic matter. Organic matter acts as a sponge, retaining water for uptake by the colorful flowers. It is important to have a soil structure which drains well. The drainage allows oxygen into the soil, this air in the soil profile is an important factor in root growth. If the soil does not drain and remains saturated, the roots will actually suffocate or suffer hypoxia (tissue being deprived of oxygen) in the roots. This leads to roots which only function at around 10% of normal roots. If your soil is not the proper mixture, it should be amended.

Amending the soil is best done by adding organic matter in the way of composted dairy manure. This nutrient rich soil additive is relatively inert when bought completely composted and screened. In most situations for amendment of soil I recommend 5 cubic yards per 1000 square feet to be roto-tilled into the newly established annual flower bed. With the initial amendment of heavy clay or just to decrease or eliminate the need for fertilizing that year, 7 cubic yards of composted dairy manure should be used for annual flowers in Denvers soils. A different approach which is more work, is to remove the soil down one foot to 18 inches and add new planting soil or potting soil. However you wish to prepare your garden bed water should be added to “wet” the soil as to prevent the from soil sucking the water out of the new plants & flowers.

3) Watering

It is important to the survival of the plant material to have sufficient water, especially if just planted. Once planted all annual flowers and colorful vegetation needs to be thoroughly watered 2-3 times after planting. After initial watering, all plants which got knocked over should be up righted and adjusted as necessary to ensure good soil contact. Soil should be allowed to dry slightly to reduce pest and disease issues. Irrigation by a drip emitter system, drip tubing or netafim is the best way to help your annual flowers survive. Irrigation mainly acts as an insurance policy to give the minimum amount of water to survive. When combined with hand watering during the week, the vegetation really takes hold and the flowers bloom exquisitely.

***Pots need to be hand watered often. In Denver this may be twice daily, once daily or even once every couple days. As always, the weather, the size of the pot, the exposure to the sun and the type of plant material in your containers will dictate the watering schedule needed to make your patio garden look wonderful.

4) Fertilizing

Adding the needed nutrients to any plant will make it grow better, stronger and provide intense flower color. A general balanced flower fertilizer of 10-10-10 is recommended in most situations. (The numbers represent a percentage of the total contents, in this case; 10% Nitrogen - 10% Phosphorous - 10% Potassium ; the other 70% is just inert or inactive material). Each plant requires different amount of each nutrient to promote adequate vegetative growth, root growth and flowering.

With fertilizers there are two different ways it is released, immediately or over time. Great care should taken in order not to poison the plants with too much fertilizer. Miracle-gro is a quick release fertilizer and can be used every few weeks to help promote healthy growth. Too much of this fertilizer at one time and it may cause water to be unavailable to the plants. An osmocoted fertilizer pellet will fertilize the soil around it over weeks as water deteriorates the pellet layers. This is the safest way to fertilize as the amount needed to be toxic is greater with the slow release formula.

***A way to stay organic is to use a natural compost and amend the flower bed, as stated earlier.

5) Deadheading

Annual flowers generally only last one year. Their whole goal in this short life time is to reproduce. The beautiful flowers produced by the plants is the vessel of reproduction. When a flower is spent it usually means it has become fertilized and will produce a seed pod. Since the goal of annual flowers is to reproduce, most the energy created in the plant will be allocated to the production of seed. To redirect this energy, the seed pods must be removed in a process known as “deadheading.” It is important not to just remove the flower petal, but the base of the flower itself. This can usually be done by pinching the soft stem tissue with nails of your thumb & index finger. Some people prefer scissors, just remember they are dangerous tools and should be handled with care.

This combination will help your annual flowers look their best and provide spring color through to the first freeze. Please note that most annuals are annual in Denver due to the frost. In the Denver area, it is best to plant after mother’s day (May 10) to account for the frost.

Here at A Better Garden, we understand some people don’t have time to do all the work to have a great looking flower display. We will happily work with you to set up installation of flower pots, containers, annual flower beds or planting within a perennial bed. Planting a vegetable garden starts with timing of planting seeds, starting them indoors or buying vegetable starts from your local greenhouse. Along with this, you must consider how much area to devote to growing a crop and stagger planting time and variety to ensure a continuous harvest. Crop rotation is an important factor in reducing pathogens in your home garden. Home vegetable gardening is a rewarding experience and should be done to provide healthy food for your family

The first thing which needs to be done to have a good harvest is knowing when to plant each vegetable. Some seeds require what is known as stratification to have a seed germinate. Stratifying a seed can be accomplished by a thaw freeze cycle or even by washing away certain chemicals produced by the plant. Various seeds only germinate under the right temperature. This is why it is usually easier to research the veggies you are wanting grown in your garden to see the best way to plant the crop. A good choice is always to go down to a nursery and get plants which have already been started. Some gardening services also offer at the least installation, while others, such as A Better Garden Maintenance LLC, install, maintain and assist in harvesting your garden.

Planning spacing and which types of vegetables seeds to sow for the harvest can be a new experience. Along with the area devoted to supporting a plant of a specific crop, you must also look at use of the garden area in regards to shading, crop height, water usage and any effect on second plantings of fall season or cool season crops. Something to consider in a garden recommendation for planting does not mean the plant will be confined between these areas. Watermelon and squash are very invasive and can quickly cover lower and slower growing plantings. Planting these along your path will help in allowing this unutilized area to become a space to grow a juicy melon. Additionally tske a look at planting corn as this may cause a shading effect which will affect the crops grown behind and beside it.

You also want to consider planting based on having a continuous or prolonged harvest. This is done by planting every few days or choosing different cultivars of the same vegetable. Most vegetables have an estimated time to harvest based on field trials conducted. By considering sun, harvest time, invasiveness, and how to prolong your harvest you will have a garden which provides fresh vegetables for your family throughout the season.

Call now (303) 433 - 3750, if you need consultation for a vegetable garden in the Denver Metro Area. It is a great opportunity to work as a family or enjoy the fruit of your land. Soon plants will start budding with new foliage and flowers. The lawn will need the first cutting, trimming and edging to make things look sharp. The lawn sprinkler system will need activated and all sprinklers repaired to start the growing season off right. Plan now in order to be prepared for Denver’s upcoming lawn mowing and garden maintenance season.

The twigs from shrubs protruding are looking bleak among the mulch and trees. The bare ground where your lush garden stood last year is still active and growing in your Denver garden. These apparently baron sticks will bring forth leaves and early spring flowers. Fruit trees will present their beautiful and fragrant blossoms. It is important to tend to these plants in the correct season to add consistent splendor to your Colorado garden.

Whether you live in Englewood, Golden, Lonetree, Greenwood Village or in the heart of Denver your lawn will need to be trimmed multiple times in April. This prevents shock and stress to the turf grass which occurs when you take off more than 1/3 of the grass’s leaf blade. Usually in the Denver metro area, a Denver lawn mowing contract would be from the beginning of April and last through the end October. During the first month and the last month of the lawn mowing season, April and October, the grass is usually only mowed twice due to the turf areas growing more slowly at these times. Irrigation systems for your lawn and garden might affect how quickly your grass grows.

A properly functioning lawn sprinkler system is essential in Denver. With our weather patterns always changing ,we never know when the next rainfall will occur. Your Denver lawn sprinkler system repair’s need to occur when the irrigation system is started up. All sprinkler zones need to be ran through and adjusted on a regular basis, weekly after mowing is best, through out the season while actively irrigating your residential or commercial landscape. Having your system tuned up by a qualified sprinkler repair technician is an important way to help prevent water waste from irrigating your lawn and garden.

A wise person prepares for and takes stock of what needs to be done. Rainfall is inconsistent and sometimes sparse throughout Denver’s growing season. Automatic lawn and garden sprinkler systems are the best way to properly water the landscape at your Denver home or business. Just remember, most cities require contractors to pull permits and to be licensed & insured. It is important to make sure things are done correctly to prevent problems in the future.

Plants need supplemental irrigation to survive the high light intensity produced at the higher elevation of the Denver front range. The sun at our altitude can place more stress on plants at a much quicker rate. The rainfall varies from year to year. At times there is nothing but afternoon thundershowers which drench our lawns, gardens and Denver streets. Yet there is weeks of endless Colorado sunshine with high temperatures which cause drought conditions. These times make our parched plants scream for water to survive. During these periods of drought, water must be applied to prevent stress and provide healthy growth.

The best way to supplement water is with a system which efficiently provides it to the plant. It is important to ensure that the system is installed properly to achieve water wise management of the turf and garden areas. If a Denver lawn sprinkler system is not installed in a manner to irrigate similar areas with the same style of sprinkler head, or areas are not split to be ran by themselves, you will have water wasted in your landscape. Drip systems should be used whenever possible as the provide the water to the root of the plants, which deters a lot of foliage disease. Annual flowers for spring and summer color should be on a zone to allow them to be watered individually throughout the heat of the day. Make sure you hire a professional, with water wise experience, to design and install your Denver lawn sprinkler system.

At A Better Garden Maintenance, LLC we specialize in lawn sprinkler systems and garden drip irrigation systems. We provide lawn and garden sprinkler system renovations, design/build sprinkler systems based on pressure and available water, provide spring start-ups and sprinkler activation, install & service backflow devices, and also service the Denver metro area with a sprinkler repair technician & parts service. Now is a good time to get the rest of the leaves cleaned up in your garden. Some bushes need to be rejuvenated or just cleaned up. Adding mulch to your garden will make your yard have color during the bleak days ahead until spring. A little extra care now can make your Denver garden healthy and vigorous this growing season.

Plant growth is stunted when disease is present. Many plant pathogens over winter in the leaves of the plants they effect. Removing these leaves from the garden will seriously decrease the risk of pests and diseases being present this next gardening season. With perennials last years leaves have lost their color and began new basal growth (new lush green growth at the bottom or base of the plant). These plants need to have the old growth of the plant cut off and removed from the garden. Remember, most perennials die back to their base and begin new growth for the next season. Bushes are similar, yet are more specialized since their growth produces lignins which strengthen the previous years growth.

Shrubs are also termed as a “woody plant” since these chemicals produced affect the strength of the shrub, usually allowing it to grow much larger than a perennial. They also will produce new buds towards the end of the growing season which are where the new leaves or beautiful flowers are produced for the following Denver spring. It is important to understand the bushes characteristics, such as whether the buds will be flowers or leaves, before pruning any branches of shrubs in your garden. If necessary it is important to revitalize the shrub when growth gets too old or to remove any spent flowers such as rose hips or other seed pods created last year. Branches that cross each other and which might rub together should be removed as well. All debris such as branches and the extra leaves stuck between newly branches should be removed to give your garden a wonderfully clean look.

When the garden is clean of all leaves and debris, mulch should be the next consideration. There are a few varieties of mulch to choose from. Shredded cedar and bark mulch are the by far the most popular selected. They add a lovely touch to any home or business in Denver or Greenwood Village. Various people also appreciate a more recycled and colored mulch. Metro mulches are produced from construction waste, tree limbs and other recycled products. These woody materials, once recycled and steam treated to reduce weed seeds, are stained different colors to accent your house or commercial building. Mulch beautifies your property and by helping to retain water in the soil, enriches the life of all plants in your garden.

Great gardens, whether in Golden, Denver, Lonetree or Greenwood Village, are based upon the preparation provided when plants are not visibly growing. Your garden‘s, whether residential or commercial, risk for disease is reduced as leaf debris and pruning debris is removed. A well groomed woody plant or shrub, from pruning, makes for healthy, vigorous growth in the upcoming spring season.
Mulch will give some color to the bleak winter days where your garden plants sits seemingly idle. If these items are out of your skill range or if you just do not have the time, give us a call (303) 433 - 3750 and we can help you have A Better Garden.

Helping people enjoy the beauty of God in their lawn & gardens

Dormant pruning is much needed in most gardens in the Denver Metro area. Topdressing new organic mulch is something which can be done to help retain moisture and enhance the color of the garden. Some things such as watering and finishing clearing out leaves from your garden can only be done when snow is not covering your garden areas.

Some bushes or shrubs sometimes need to be trimmed in the fall or winter to allow them to grow properly the next year. Butterfly Bushes (Buddleia davidii), Blue Mist Spirea (Caryopteris candensis), Russian Sage (Perovskia atriplicifolia), and other shrubs which just finished blooming later in summer and fall need to be cut back to approximately three inches (3”) off the ground. Be careful not to prune bushes such as lilacs (Syringa spp.) or forsythia (Forsythia spp.). Some shrubs such as Red or Yellow Twig Dogwood (Cornus sericea or Cornus sericea flaviramea; repstectively), need to have the old wood carefully removed from the bush to allow new colorful growth.

Color and texture is also added by installing or topdressing mulch in your gardens. Mulch has many beneficial effects and can be detrimental if not used properly. Mulch helps retain water and keeps the soil cooler beneath the mulch layer. It also protects plants from this harsh Colorado climate. Remember, mulch should only be applied to a depth of no more than four inches (4”). When more than four inches of mulch is applied other issues may occur. Things such as locking up nutrients, not allowing air to enter into the soil and absorption of water by the mulch can occur when too much mulch is applied. Adding mulch is a hugely beneficial aspect and should not be neglected in the Denver Metro Area.

When mulch is applied it is a great time to water the areas to help add weight to the mulch, evenly distribute the mulch and add water to the soil. Deeply watering trees, shrubs, perennials and even your lawn will dramatically effect their growth in the spring and summer. Deep watering during the winter and early spring, when sprinkler systems are shutdown, allows roots to penetrate the soil. Deeper roots means more root area, which allows plants to absorb more water & nutrients which increases survival in Denver’s semi-arid climate. (***Remember water should only be applied when there is no snow covering the ground and the temperature is above 40 degrees Fahrenheit.)

Get out in your garden and get prepared for the upcoming gardening season. What is done now dramatically effects the health of your garden. Help your Denver garden get started growing the right way this spring by watering, leaf cleanup, adding mulch to the proper depth and pruning your garden correctly.

A Better Garden Maintenance, LLC is here to provide assistance or to fully take control and help you have A Better Garden. But how do you do it? You can make one yourself for little or not cost, or you can buy one at a store at a higher cost, but with more convenience. One do it yourself option goes something like this; Get a large metal garbage can. Drill holes (or hammer a large nail through to make holes) every 3-4" all around the can, in rows about 3-4" apart. To turn the compost, you just tie the lid down with a bit of twine through its lid and the handles on the side of the can, tip the whole thing over, and roll it around the yard a bit. If you decide that you would like to save time and purchase one, you can find them at various home improvement and gardening stores. Prices range from very inexpensive to a bit costly depending on the quality and features of the bin.

Now that your compost bin is set up, now what do you do? First, make sure that you place your compost bin some where away from the house in a shady area. Direct sunlight will dry the compost out. Next, put dry leaves or newspaper in the bottom of the bin. Fill it to about 1/8 – 1/4 full. Now take dirt from your garden and fill it to the half way point of your bin. Now take various organic scraps and paper products and place them in the bin. These are things like eggs shells, orange rinds, grapes, paper towels, etc. Next stir your compost bin, making sure that the scraps are covered with dirt. Spray the mix with lukewarm water till it’s moist, but not soaking wet. Add food scraps every couple of days ensuring that you stir it every time you add something. You will need to wait a few months before using your compost. Make sure that you save at least a third of it so you can make new compost as needed.

There are some common problems that you may run into with your compost bin. First is smell. If it’s far enough away from the house, you may not need to worry about this. But if it does start to become noticeably smelly it is either too wet or has too many un-decomposed scraps in it. Hold off on adding any more water and scraps for a few days and make sure to stir it well. You may also run into our furry friends and insects getting into your compost bin. First make sure not to put any meat in your compost bin. This will attract them like fruit flies. Speaking of fruit flies, if this becomes a problem, add dry soil to the top of the mix. You can also add ammonia to the compost. This will make sure that mice, raccoons, etc. stay out.

Once your compost is ready, you will still need to keep it in the shade for a few days before use. This is because the material is still producing heat from decomposition and will harm or kill the plants that you put it on. Take off the lid and put it into the shade and out of the rain. Leave it there for a few days and when the bin is cool to the touch, your compost is ready for use!

Take the time now to ensure that your garden is beautiful this summer. Call 303-433-3750 for all of your gardening needs and start making your garden healthy now!

Helping people enjoy the beauty of God in their lawn & gardens

However, in Colorado's dry climate, your yard does need to be watered throughout the year. We are blessed with many sunny days and this makes it so that there is not a consistent snow cover. Without the snow cover on the lawn, your grass does not get the water that it needs (it is alive year round) and can be damaged this way. Watering in the winter is only done when there is no snow cover on the ground and it is above 40 degrees outside. You can most easily accomplish this by hand watering. Check you lawn and perennials every 4-6 weeks throughout the winter season to make sure that they are getting enough water for what they need throughout the winter months. With so much sunshine and milder temperatures, we are not under a snow pack throughout the entire winter. However, our brief yet intense and somewhat frequent storms can create quite a snow and ice headache that must be attended to. In Denver and surrounding areas, there are county and city ordinances that exist on residential snow removal. Most are that the home or property owner has 24 hours after the cessation of a storm to have all sidewalks and access cleared of snow and ice. Ignoring this can cost you. The first time fine for this is $100.00 and successive citations come with a maximum penalty of $1000.00 and 90 days in jail.

Another aspect to all this is ice removal. Ice forms and reforms long after the storm is gone and this to can open you up to serious liability. Property owners, lessors, property managers and landlords all liable for any injury incurred on property that is not correctly and properly maintained. This is called premises liability law. Ice patrol fulfills your obligations as a property owner, lessor, property manager and landlord and makes your property safe and hazard free.

When shoveling your own property keep in mind a few things; Make sure that you clear the whole sidewalk as well as an edging of grass. This way when the snow melts it not only avoids water running onto the sidewalk (which will re-form into ice) but it also directs the water onto your lawn. This is important as your lawn requires watering in the winter too. Don’t apply ice melt during the storm itself. This will also melt the snow as it falls which will just create more ice. Ice melt should be applied after the storm when more snow will not be added to the ice that you are trying to get rid of.

Besides convenience, having a snow removal service frees you from worry and time expended into keeping your property free of snow and ice. At A Better Garden Maintenance, LLC we provide professional and reliable snow removal services to the entire Denver Metro area. It seems that as the cool days and nights set it that there is nothing left until spring time. This is not true! Getting your yard prepared for the winter is the prudent way to ensure that your lawn, foliage, your landscape investment is in tip top shape for the spring time by preventing disease, and pest infestation. All this works together to allow your lawn, plants and trees to become better situated in the winter leaving them strong and healthy for the spring.

So, how does cleaning up your yard prevent disease? Well, it does so in several ways; First of all, if leaves and dead plant material are left where they fall, a couple things can happen. The dead plant material starts to rot – which will transfers onto your lawn and healthy plants. It also prevents much needed air circulation into the lawn which weakens the lawn over the winter, which also opens it up to disease. Secondly, a fall clean-up also entails pruning back foliage, trees and bushes. By doing so, limbs, branches, stems, etc. that are broken or will be broken during the winter are removed, again preventing disease and infection from getting into the plant. With the leaves and other dead foliage removed and bushes and trees trimmed back, you are helping your yard have a healthy winter and a beautiful spring.

Now a yard and garden with dead plant material and leaves all over is a safe haven for pests. This gives them a perfect environment during the winter time to be safe, warm and breed with an ample supply of food. So then, come spring time, your lawn and garden are already infested with slugs, snails and the likes. Therefore, a good fall clean-up gets rid of all the materials that would otherwise attract and harbor common garden pests.

A key element in having a healthy lawn and trees is, in fact, the winter months. During this time, grass roots as far in the ground as possible. This results in your lawn becoming even more healthy and more beautiful when the spring and summer months finally come back. This is actually why this time of year is the best time to sod or re-sod. It is also why fall is the time to get your lawn fertilized and aerated. You will most definitely see the difference come spring.

At A Better Garden Maintenance, LLC, we offer full fall yard clean up and can work with you in whatever you need to make sure that your lawn is ready for fall. Your landscape investment is important enough to have the professionals get your yard ready for the winter. Call (303) 433-3750 to make your appointment for your fall clean up today.

Helping people enjoy the beauty of God in their lawn & gardens

They accent the building, garden and turf areas to really pull together the look of the landscape . The great thing about Denver’s climate is it is a unique climate which allows for landscape construction to be accomplished throughout the year. As in everything, you get what you pay for; the life of a paver patio, paver pathway, or paver driveway is directly linked to the methods used during construction.

Having a paver feature installed can dramatically change the view of your properties landscape during the winter time. While there are factors which deter from being able to work until Denver’s semi-arid climate warms up, there are ways to overcome this. Shaded and/or snow packed areas can get in the way as there will be snow cover and frozen ground. However, when large equipment is accessible, these issues can be overcome by removal of the snow and using heaters when the ground is frozen. This adds extra cost to the process but can be useful to meet deadlines for grand openings or for other special events. Fortunately, with the extreme shifts of temperature during the winter time, most Denver area properties are not under snow pack.

Denver’s climate changes our view of a Landscape during each season. The mixture of a patterned stone paver patio along a garden allows for a relaxing and garden viewing spot in the overall garden and lawn layout. The color and permanent paver feature accent Denver properties all year long. A paver patio can be laid next to a concrete pathway or stoop of the house. In larger areas a paver pathway can lead to a paver patio in a secluded area or an area with a view of the mountains towards Golden or Morrison. These hardscape features can last for a very long time if they are installed properly.

It is important to make sure you have a quality landscape contractor which will construct your patio, walkway or paver drive using the appropriate methods and specifications. Grade is important as water will be directed down the slope of the grade of the paver In a basic paver patio or paver pathway, the minimum ‘base’ needed is six (6) inches of compacted road base. With paver drives and surfaces where vehicles will travel over them a minimum of eight (8) inches of compacted road base. In both situations sand is then used to help the leveling of the paver feature prior to laying the paver stones. A quality landscape construction company will give you warranty for the product they install. A Better Garden Maintenance, LLC offers a five (5) year warranty for paver patios & paver pathways and a three (3) year warranty with the paver drives they install.

Installation of hardscape features such as paver drives, paver pathways and paver patios add value to your property along with giving your property an outdoor living, dining and utility area. Craftsmanship has its own intrinsic value and directly effects the life of your hardscape (paver patio, paver pathway, paver drive) feature. And remember, any time of the year is a good time to install paver features. Call A Better Garden Maintenance, LLC today to setup a free estimate for all your garden and landscape construction needs.
(303) 433-3750

Helping people enjoy the beauty of God in their lawn & gardens

Landscape Construction can always be performed with the right equipment and the right conditions. The cool temperatures allow plants to support with ease and transport energy into the roots over the fall and winter. This newly installed sod and perennials needs to be watered over the winter. They are still actively growing and can suffer stress from lack of water. A lack of water over the winter from limited snow and rainfall which is not supplemented can cause dessication and dieback of the plant. Deep watering allows roots to grow deep limiting potential drought stress.

This yard below was requested to have a complete landscape and garden overhaul.

The garden along the Denver house had volunteers close to the foundation. The massive cottonwood in the center of the landscape had suckers all over the base and lower trunk. Landscape fabric was showing and plants needed cut back to their basal growth. The mixture of weeds and various grasses needed removed along with amending the soil with 5 cubic yards of composted dairy manure for every 1000 square feet of area.

The whole area was roto-tilled and lines were trenched in for the Rainbird lawn sprinkler system to be installed.

This quaint Denver home had an automatic three (3) zone RainBird Lawn Sprinkler System professionally installed. The lowest points of each zone had a Seal-A-Matic Rainbird 3504 Rotor installed to prevent water waste. The zones were nozzle to match precipitation rates. An outdoor controller was utilized to reduce the hassle of going inside for the lawn sprinkler system running outdoors. The inside tap and backflow prevention device requires a permit issued from the city and county of Denver. (These permits should be hung from your front window in plain sight). And a FebCo ¾” 765 was installed as required by Denver code.

The final touches of sod, perennials, and mulch were placed and the sprinkler system activated on November 7, 2009 as shown above.

Anytime is a good time to plant in the Denver Metro area, but Fall and Winter is a great time to plant. Give us a call today to setup a free estimate for your lawn sprinkler system, sod installation or shrub & perennial installation.

(303) 433-3750.

Helping people enjoy the beauty of God in their lawn & gardens

With a foot or more of snow in most of the cities across the Front Range yesterday, another 3-6 inches is expected by mid afternoon today. Today is colder than yesterday as well, so expect a lot of ice during the day, not just at night when the temperature drops. As of 8am this morning, Arvada has accumulated 18.5" of snow, downtown Denver is at 14.5", Littleton is at 19" and Westminster is at 22". That's a lot of snow! Already in parts of Denver there is up to 3-4 inches accumulated. This snow is just the beginning. Everywhere from Arvada & Golden, to Highlands Ranch and Lonetree are covered in white powder. It is important to get this snow removed promptly.

When snow is not removed as it falls or soon there after it can create ice. With cold temperature down in the low 20s ice is sure to be formed. When people or vehicles travel over snow it compacts. Compaction of snow, especially when there has been rain prior to the snow fall, is the beginning of the formation of ice. In Denver, Golden or Lakewood, its not a matter of if, but when ice is going to form.

Anywhere you live across the Denver Metro area ice is an issue which needs to be dealt with. Ice melt is the best solution.

****Ice melt can cause pollution to turf areas and to city storm drainage. Ice melt (Sodium Chloride, Magnesium Chloride, Potassium Chloride), Sand & Salt (Sodium Chloride), and Slicer(clay coated Magnesium Chloride) should be used sparingly, but not as to effect the ability to make the site (Residence, Parking Lot, Building Complex, Apartment Complex, Retail Establishment) safe.

A little goes a long way is the phrase to remember. Yet there are those situations where a lot of ice melt or ice removal materials are needed. Safety is the number one concern and dictates the use of deicing materials. There are situations (bad drainage from storm gutters, clogged storm gutters) which place additional water in major pathways. These issues should be addressed immediately to reduce the chemicals which will need to be used during a Denver snow event.

A Better Garden Maintenance, LLC is still accepting clients, Commercial Snow Removal Contracts & Residential Snow Removal Contract, for snow plowing and snow shoveling. How often you do it is the only thing that changes. Watering during the winter is especially important in Colorado as we are in a semi-arid climate. While we do have snow fall, the snow cover does not stick around therefore the soil does not get a steady supply of moisture. This can damage or kill the root system. Plants that are damaged in this way may appear perfectly healthy until the temperature warms up. At this point the damaged plant, now weakened, may now die in the spring warm up or be much more susceptible to disease or infestation. Watering combined with mulching will help protect your soil and plants throughout the winter season.

Depending on precipitation, you will need to water every 3-5 weeks. Watering should only be done in weather that is forty degrees or warmer and there should be no snow covering on the ground. Plants and trees in windier areas also need to be watered more often as they are more quickly dried out by the wind. A Better Garden Maintenance furnishes this service for our clients on request. Contact us at 303-433-3750 to get your winter watering scheduled for this winter season. Low temperatures are expected to reach mid to high twenties (25-28 Degrees Fahrenheit) everywhere across the Denver Metro Area from Golden through Greenwood Village all the way down to Lonetree, Colorado. Across the Denver Metro Area we have already experienced a light frost roughly a week ago. This frost expected Saturday would be a harder freeze which would be more damaging to Backflow Prevention Devices (BP). There are several ways to delay and hopefully avoid the onset of freeze damage to a Pressure Vacuum Breaker (PVB) or Reduced Pressure Assembly (RPA).

Allowing an irrigation system to continue watering the turf and garden areas requires the Backflow Prevention Device to be wrapped in Insulation. The Reduced Pressure Assembly (RPA) or Pressure Vacuum Breaker (PVB) is wrapped in Encapsulated Insulation and secured with Duct tape. Black Trash Bags are used to protect the insulation from water. The bags must also be secured by Duct Tape. Denver Area Commercial properties usually have the irrigation system running until the end of October and sometimes later. This is usually based on how low temperatures fall in Littleton, Englewood, Golden, Denver or the rest of the Denver Metro Area.

The most common method to avoid damage under short notice is to drain the Backflow Prevention Device. This only allows for expansion of the water through opening such as the Test Cocks. Backflow Prevention Devices (BP) should have the water to the irrigation system turned off. All Test Cocks/ Pet Cocks must be opened and left to a forty-five degree angle. Turning ball valves to a forty-five degree angle will also help reduce possible damage. Some Backflow Prevention Devices (BP) sometimes have a brass drain elbow or a brass drain coupler installed to help drain the pipe completely. It also has an added value of allowing water to drain over the winter if you have a defective Gate Valve.

Defective Gate Valves often are the true culprit of damage to Backflow Prevention Devices after they have been professionally winterized. The reason is because, Gate Valves contain a rubber gasket which over little time wears through or disentegrates and prevents seating of the valve. When the valve does not seat, water slowly and continuously leaks through your main shut-off to your Greenwood Village or Arvada lawn sprinkler system Backflow Prevention Device (BP). Defective Gate valves can be replaced with a ball valve by a company, such as A Better Garden Maintenance, LLC, which is licensed for Inside Tap and Backflow Devices.

If anyone would like to get a Denver Metro Commercial or Residential Property’s irrigation system winterized , please pay attention to the listing of the areas we will service dependent on the day. Despite the name, Pansies are actually very tough and thrive in the cooler months. If you plant them now, they will continue to bloom, even in the cold freezing Colorado winter. On our warmer January and February days watch your garden. If the ground thaws, you’ll see pretty little flowers!

Now is the ideal time to plant your spring bulbs. This includes planting things like tulips, daffodils, irises and crocuses. The bulbs do the best when planted in soil that is 55 degrees or lower. This allows it to get the roots and stability it needs to produce a beautiful spring bloom. Contact us at A Better Garden at 303-433-3750 to schedule your fall planting. The answer is, absolutely. Once the ground freezes water underneath the ground surface will freeze as well. If water is still left in your sprinkler/irrigation system, that water will freeze and expand, destroying your system. Getting your sprinkler/irrigation systems winterized now is the most prudent way to protect and prolong their life.

On Monday October 5th we will be in the North Denver,/Thorton area. Tuesday October 6th we will be in the Bonnie Brae area and on Friday October 9th we will be in the Highlands area. There is still space available on those days to get your sprinkler winterization done. Schedule your system blow out now with A Better Garden Maintenance, LLC by calling (303) 433-3750 ASAP for priority scheduling.
